I took a girls trip this past week with a friend of mine. It was amazing! To my surprise, Barcelona is a huge city that boasts 24 hour transportation, a slew of restaurants and shopping and tons of activities. The coolest thing about Barcelona is the diversity of the area. With a busy metropolitan area, mountains and beaches, you can bar-hop, hike and surf!
We visited Barcelona a few weeks after the Catalan Independence Referendum. Although the media was a buzz about the political controversy, the city seemed still and very safe. We were able to enjoy a great trip, and even catch a few peaceful protestors in action.
The day after we arrived, we took a day trip to explore Montserrat in Monistrol de Montserrat, the home of Our Lady of Monserrat. While on the mountain we visited the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, the Museum of Montserrat and walked through a street of local vendors in search of homemade goodies.
We had the freshest 5-course lunch at the Heretat Oller del Mas vineyard. After lunch, we walked around the vineyard for a quick lesson on wine agriculture. From there, we stepped inside the Castle of Oller of the Mas to learn about Oller del Mas’s variety of wines and for a tasting. I’m not a huge fan of Spanish wine personally, but it was an experience.
The following day, we took an-hour bus tour around Barcelona and walked around it’s downtown city area. We did some souvenir shopping and then joined the locals at the center-square. We sat at a little bistro in the square and ordered pre-dinner sangria (I had a coffee). I went a little coffee crazy because the coffee in Barcelona is so delicious. I had my fair share of cafe con leche and cortados!
After drinks we headed to Xiringuito Escribà for dinner, a local favorite right on the beach. We enjoyed the tastiest seafood platter and chicken paella. After dinner we walked along the the docks and discovered a strip of lounges and clubs. We pulled up a table at one of the lounges had a cocktail and enjoyed the late night beachy breeze.
All an all we had a wonderful time in Barcelona. I recommend it as a travel location for anyone who likes to stay busy and do lots of activities while aboard. Oh, and definitely have coffee while you’re there!
